Berlin
Last week we finally managed to get to Berlin. Tina and Kristen were coming to visit and Berlin was the first stop before they came to stay with us in Amsterdam. We had great coffee every morning thanks to Tina's masterful research. We took a bike tour in freezing weather through the Tiergarten, the Brandenburg gate, Checkpoint Charlie and other icons from 70's Cold War spy thrillers. I was wearing my vintage Michael Caine glasses for good measure...
The Hamburger Banhoff is a former trainstation that now holds an amazing modern art collection. Warhol, Bueys, Anselm Kiefer along with light installations from Dan Flavin and the light installation, "5 Minutes of Pure Sculpture"
The Berlin Wall still plays a major part in the city - as an historic reminder, as art installation and as backdrop to The Topography of Terror exhibit. Nearby is the Holocaust Memorial, rectangular blocks of cement placed on an undulating floor.
